Duties:MAJOR OBJECTIVE (PURPOSE) OF THE JOB. • Leads the safety efforts in the IRO Operations with focus on safety processes and programs (as out-lined in the S7) SUPPORTING OBJECTIVES. • Provides leadership and serves as a resource to the IRO Operation Managers concerning safety, compliance, technical service and environmental issues • Advises, directs and follows-up without taking decision making responsibility and authority from appropriate individuals • Works with the IRO Training Director to develop training materials and resources for all safety related training at the operations • Creates an environment for growth and development of co-workers • Works with customer(s) to understand their safety expectations and ensure a “No Worry” relationship in the safety areas • Performs and follows-up on safety audits. Teach and help implement the observation and inspection processes • Helps develop action plans where needed • Has the ability to develop and teach a JHA and the appropriate procedures to identify and correct or avoid safety hazards • Identifies and develops the reports necessary to ensure compliance with applicable state & federal regulations (Permits, state safety programs, spill plans, etc.) • In the event of an occurrence, assists the Operation Manager to ensure the safety of everyone involved, identify the Root Cause(s) and makes corrections to keep the occurrence from happening again • Assists in the hiring process when needed • Works with the Service Support Center and the IRO Operation Management Team in the development and the implementation of the Safety Strategy of the company • Participates in start-up operations directing and overseeing the safety evaluation and safety practices definitions SKILLS AND ABILITIES. • Maintains a current knowledge of rules, regulations and compliance issues effecting operations. (OSHA, EPA, MSHA, FRA, etc.) • Is capable of handling multiple tasks • Manages time effectively (able to plan, organize and implement around priorities) • Possesses an understanding of and commitment to the Savage System • Demonstrates by example the safety standards and values of Savage • Is able to work with an operation team, building the Savage Safety culture at the operation • Understands or has been exposed to contractor safety programs, basic safety training for hazmat, chemical training and certification) • Has appropriate experience in rail and equipment safety. Understands or have been trained in rail equipment certification, and OSHA laws • Has adequate experience with mine properties and state and federal regulations (MSHA) • Communicates effectively both in front of a group or one-on-one • Is able to draw upon Savage resources to assist the IRO Operations • Is a skilled listener who is able to consider the perspectives of a wide range of people • Is computer literate and able to develop and track information as well as research and analyze information TEAM & PEOPLE ISSUES. • Works with the Regional VP’s and the Operation Managers to help them build a Safety Team and assist in identifying and accomplishing any safety performance improvement needed • Is proactive and has the ability to approach our people in a non-threatening way to coach them in making appropriate corrections in their behavior PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. • Has the physical health to work with our people in the field to demonstrate and train them in their jobs and assignments • Is able to work outside in different environments • Is willing to work different shifts and weekends as needed • Must have the ability and willingness to travel ATTRIBUTES. • Honest • Professional in dress and working with employees, customers and public. • Fair in work with team members. • Passionate about safety and people. • Reliable • Possesses a positive attitude • Able to anticipate hazards and has a sense of urgency to make the appropriate corrections.
